About the person: Matthew Longo is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Psychological Sciences. He completed his BA degree in Cognitive Science at the University of California, Berkeley in 2000, and his PhD in Psychology at the University of Chicago in 2006. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London from 2006 to 2010, when he joined Birkbeck.
Matthew Longo is the director of the Body Representation Laboratory. His research uses a range of methods from perceptual psychophysics and cognitive neuroscience to investigate the psychological and neural bases of our experience and mental representation of our bodies and how this shapes our perception of the world.
About the Career Talk: In his career talk, Matthew Longo will discuss his career path, how he became Professor Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Psychological Sciences and what his day-to-day work looks like. But the main topic is: PhDs within 4 years. How do you do it? We are very curious. Mattew Longo will discuss his experiences and, for example: What he understands by supervising PhDs? What expectations he has of PhDs? What he looks for when hiring new PhDs? what he finds important in the career development within a PhD (not only professionally)? What should PhDs know at the end of their PhD if they want to continue working as a postdoc or leave academia? What are no-gos? And finally: has anything changed for PhDs since Brexit?
After 20-40 minutes, you can take the opportunity to ask Matthew Longo the questions that are burning on your mind.

Career paths are rare straight and I want to show the diversity and potential, but also the potential downsides. I am always very open to topics and the invited person only talks about what they want to talk about.
