MR Methods Meeting

12. Oktober 2017, 15:30 Uhr, DZNE, Haus 64, Raum 121

Title: "Are we safe at 7 T MR?"

Speaker: Dr.-Ing. Mahsa Fatahi

Group: Biomedical Magnetic Resonance, Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg

Possible genotoxic and carcinogenic effects of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially with high and ultra-high field strengths, have been among the main questions and concerns in the last decades. Both theoretical considerations and empirical evidence indicate that direct damage to genetic material caused by non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of a single frequency, per se, is not likely. However, the question of whether the combined EMFs generated by MRI scanners, can enhance the effects of genetic-damaging agents remains still unanswered and there is still no consensus in the scientific community even about the existence of harmful effects generated by MRI scanners.
