Prof. Mario Engelmann and his team investigate the neurobiological substrate underlying learning and memory processes, as well as the regulation of the endocrine stress response in laboratory rodents. With these approaches, they aim to better understand the beneficial and aversive interactions between physical and mental challenge ("stress") and cognitive performance. To achieve this, they use behavioral tests and monitor physiological and cellular parameters. Pharmacological and genetic manipulations are employed to modify intra- and extracellular signaling pathways at the brain level, with a particular focus on limbic and cortical brain areas.
