Jürgen Goldschmidt

Dr. Jürgen Goldschmidt leads the Working Group on Cerebral Metabolism and Functional Small Animal Imaging at the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg. Goldschmidt's main interest lies in mapping global, brain-wide spatial patterns of neuronal activity at both regional and cellular levels in experimental animals during behavior. The working group uses the coupling of neuronal activity to blood flow and metabolism for this purpose, particularly also to the potassium turnover, and investigates cerebral metabolism by injecting radioactively labeled substances, the distribution of which is measured using emission computed tomography (SPECT and PET), as well as substances that can be detected at the light or electron microscopic level. These procedures, some of which were developed in Goldschmidt's working group, have also proven to be very suitable for studying the disturbed cerebral metabolism and the disturbed network activities in animal models of neurological and psychiatric diseases, including infectious diseases.
