Prof. Bertram Gerber and his team research how the organization of behavior is rooted in the molecular and cellular architecture of the brain. The focus of their scientific interest is on the acquisition and maintenance of memories, as well as the mechanisms of memory retrieval. For this purpose, the research group uses behavioral experiments on larval and adult fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), which allow experimental access to these processes, and combines them with methods of transgene expression to study individual circuit elements in the brain. Since many memory processes are shared between Drosophila and humans, particularly in genetic and molecular terms, this is of biomedical interest. Due to the small number of nerve cells in the Drosophila brain, further insights arise into energetically highly efficient, 'intelligent' biological minimal circuits, which are of interest from a technical perspective.
