Dr. Ulrich Thomas
Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology Magdeburg

Dr. Thomas leads the Synapse Genetics working group at the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology Magdeburg. His research focus is on the role of calcium as a secondary messenger and its consequences in a state of intracellular calcium imbalance, which is associated with various dysfunctions and degenerative phenomena of the nervous system. Using the example of larval neuromuscular junctions of the fruit fly Drosophila, Dr. Thomas's team investigates the effects of chronic changes in cytosolic calcium levels on the structure and function of glutamatergic synapses. For this purpose, genetic, molecular, and biochemical approaches are pursued, which are combined, in close collaboration with the ELMI specialized laboratory, with high-resolution and super-resolution microscopy as well as with microscopic live observations. Special attention is paid to the role of calcium pumps and their molecular interactions.
