Prof. Stefan Vielhaber leads the neurochemical laboratory at the University Hospital for Neurology of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. His research group studies disorders of mitochondrial energy metabolism, which are involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease, as well as some neuromuscular disorders. Vielhaber focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative and other mitochondrial diseases, especially the impairment of the respiratory chain and the cell's energy metabolism, as well as on energy metabolism as a potential therapeutic target and the development of new diagnostic biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases.
