Ralf Mohrmann

Prof. Dr. Ralf Mohrmann took up the professorship for Neurophysiology and Cellular Imaging at the Institute of Physiology of Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg on January 1, 2018. As a research focus, his working group "Neurophysiology and Cellular Imaging" investigates the molecular foundations of Ca2+-dependent release of transmitters from neurons and neuroendocrine cells. In detail, they examine how the involved protein complexes can bring two lipid membranes to fuse, and how these molecular processes are regulated in a physiological context. Furthermore, his group also deals with intracellular transport processes of neurotransmitter receptors in the context of synaptic plasticity. The elucidation of these processes is of enormous importance, especially for our understanding of information processing in connection with learning and memory formation in the central nervous system. In his research, Prof. Mohrmann mainly uses primary cell culture systems and transgenic animal models in combination with electrophysiological measurement methods and high-resolution microscopy techniques.
