Dr. Motoharu Yoshida
Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology Magdeburg | German Center for
Neurodegenerative Diseases e. V. Magdeburg
Dr. Yoshida leads the Department of Cognitive Neurophysiology at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases e. V. Magdeburg. His research group studies the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex, both of which are part of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and support memory functions as well as spatial navigation. Yoshida and his research group focus on the neural computations underlying the cognitive functions of the MTL. In doing so, they combine electrophysiological recordings, in vitro and in vivo, with computer simulations. Since the MTL plays a crucial role in Alzheimer’s disease and in temporal lobe epilepsy, researching the neural computations in the MTL is central not only for understanding cognitive functions and their technical applications but also for the development of treatments for dementia and epilepsy.
