Prof. Dr. Johannes Bernarding
Emeritus
Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. med. Johannes Bernarding led the Department of Biometry and Medical Informatics during his tenure and focused on three main research areas: a) functional real-time MRI (rt fMRI) and EEG including human brain interfaces with integrated adaptive virtual reality environments, b) ultra-high-field MRI (UHF), and c) development of hyperpolarization techniques and fluorinated contrast agents. Prof. Bernarding and his team used rt fMRI/EEG to investigate human brain activity while performing specific tasks in virtual reality environments. This is used to build specialized brain-computer interfaces and to analyze brain activity in real time with two coupled scanners (social rt fMRI). In addition to these projects, Prof. Bernarding developed and tested new coil designs for 7T UHF MRI, including non-proton 7T MRI. As of March 31, 2025, Prof. Bernarding has retired.
