Emeritus

Hermann Hinrichs

Prof. Hermann Hinrichs led the Brain-Machine Interface working group during his tenure, which deals with neurophysiological methods that allow planned actions to be recognized from measured human brain activity—particularly from the electroencephalogram. The focus is also on decoding attention, which enables communication through cognitive processes via conscious responses to a target stimulus, e.g., the illumination of a button. The working group aims to partially replace lost functions in patients with motor or sensory impairments, such as after a stroke or spinal cord syndrome, through brain-controlled devices. The working group was led by Prof. Hermann Hinrichs since its founding, who retired in February 2023. Since March 2023, the working group has been led by Dr. Christoph Reichert.
