Prof. Frank Angenstein has been the head of the Functional Neuroimaging research group at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Magdeburg since 2012. His work focuses on the one hand on the search for the neurophysiological basis of fMRI imaging and on the other hand on the question of how various modulatory transmitter systems influence the interaction of the hippocampus with individual cortical and subcortical brain structures and how this changes under different pathological conditions. For this purpose, individual structures of the brain are selectively activated through electrical, optogenetic, or chemogenetic stimulation, and the resulting neuronal activities are measured both directly by in vivo electrophysiological recordings in the hippocampus and indirectly across the entire brain using fMRI measurements.
