Dr. Carla Cangalaya Lira is currently conducting research in the field of neuroimmunology and microglia biology in the working group of Prof. Dr. Alexander Dityatev at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Magdeburg. In particular, she investigates in animal models how microglia, neurons, and the extracellular matrix interact in the context of neuroinflammation and is involved in the development of a humanized model to study microglia-neuron interaction using brain organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. Furthermore, she aims, using synaptic photodamage, a tool for assessing real-time two-photon imaging of microglia-neuron interactions, at implementing such a 3D human in vitro platform to facilitate the development of drugs to prevent synaptic loss in Alzheimer's disease.
