Bernhard Sabel




Prof. em. Dr. Bernhard Sabel was appointed to the chair of Medical Psychology at the then Medical Academy Magdeburg, which in 1993 became part of the newly founded Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, in 1992 and has been retired since October 2023. Since then, Sabel has been a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, Princeton University, Emory University (USA), and at the Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as the Capital Medical University in Beijing (China). From 2008 to 2010, he was Vice-Rector for Research at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and served as chairman of the Saxony-Anhalt state association in the German University Association (2019–2025); since September 2023, he has been an elected delegate of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) as the only non-ophthalmologist. Sabel has been awarded multiple times for his research. In addition, his research on the therapy of visual impairments inspired the bestselling author Andreas Pflüger for a trilogy of novels – awarded the German Crime Prize. He is voluntarily engaged with the topic of research integrity and has published a book on the subject: 'Fake Mafia in Science: AI, Greed, and Fraud in Research' (Kohlhammer Publishing), which describes the greatest scientific scandal of all time. Since 2024, he has been cooperating with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm in this regard.
