Communicating scientific

findings to the public

Wednesday, April 05, 5 p.m. Prof. Dr. Kai Sassenberg, Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien, Tübingen, Germany:

Research in medicine, neuro- and life science get a lot of attention in public, which provides opportunities for knowledge transfer. At the same time, no study provides definite evidence and scientific knowledge is never definite (i.e., it is always fragile). In addition, the topics of these disciplines are associated with many emotions: hope to overcome illnesses, fear and disgust regarding surgeries and subcutaneous interventions, and threat of illnesses felt by patients and their relatives. Emotions are known to bias information processing. This presentation will discuss research regarding knowledge transfer in the life sciences and draw conclusions regarding the verbal and written communication of scientists with the public.
